Sapphire Preferred Loses 10% Bonus
The 10% Anniversary Points Bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card will end on October 1, 2026.
This has been a unique and less talked about feature on this card, but here's how it has worked.
10% in bonus points were added to cardholder accounts based on the total spending on that account over the previous 12 month cardholder anniversary year.
For example - if someone spends $10,000, then they would receive 1,000 bonus points within a few months of the account anniversary.
Some customers noticed information inside the Chase app saying the feature was going away.
Chase then pulled the information and later confirmed it was released earlier than planned.
(Maybe an intern’s fault? haha)
Chase also said in a message:
The benefit will be discontinued as we regularly evaluate and update our benefits based on cardmember feedback and what benefits resonate most. We look forward to sharing additional updates to the Sapphire Preferred card in the near term.
The Anniversary Points Bonus was nice, but wasn’t super beneficial or worth putting extra spending on the card.
But the "additional updates" Chase hinted at are way more exciting - sounds like more information is coming soon.
We are anticipating an annual fee increase during a refresh because the card has maintained a $95 annual fee since its launch 17 years ago in 2009.
$95 in 2009 has the same buying power as about $145 in 2026.
It also feels like the Sapphire Preferred is falling behind the competition with it's spending multipliers - so a possible larger update could be good.
We'll have to wait and see! But we'll definitely let you know if any more credible rumors start to surface in the coming months.
