United Introduces “Basic Business” Fares

United recently announced “Tiered Fare Categories” on business class and premium economy bookings.

That’s fancy language that says "basic" economy fares are now being introduced in other fare classes.

For a lower ticket price and many more restrictions, customers can purchase these basic business tickets later in April on select routes.

United Polaris (United’s business class product) will now see three different booking options:

On one hand, people will experience business class for a reduced rate and may not need all the add-ons provided like an extra checked bag or seat selection.

Added flexibility is always appreciated and could save passengers money.

On the other hand, this new ticket option seems funky - to pay for a business class flight and then have restrictions for flight changes, upgrades, and refunds doesn’t add up.

Plus, no access to a United Polaris lounge before the flight or the ability to pick a seat.

Many international carriers have implemented these types of fares before, but this is the first time a US carrier has done so.

Luckily credit card points bookings are unaffected (for now) - meaning those who book an award flight receive "Standard" features from that screenshot above.

Point pricing variations would not surprise us as the next move in a few years though.

Maybe something similar to how Singapore Airlines charges different amounts for their business class bookings:
