Amex Green Name Change
The Amex Green Card is getting a name change on August 20, 2026.
Old card name:
American Express Green Card®
New card name:
American Express® Classic Green Card
Current cardholders are being notified inside of their account:
There will be no changes to card benefits, features, or the annual fee (currently at $150) and the card name adding the word "Classic" is strictly a rebranding effort, according to an article from Upgraded Points.
So why is the name change significant?
The Amex Green last had a refresh back in 2019 for its 50th anniversary.
It's had few minor changes here and there since, but nothing significant.
The Amex Green earns 3x back on travel, transit, and dining...
And that includes airfare, hotels, tours, campgrounds, car rentals, cruises, vacation rentals, trains, buses, ferries, subways, restaurants, takeout, and delivery.
Honestly not bad for multipliers - but the card only has one credit of $209 for CLEAR+.
That doesn’t really move the needle much at all to justify the $150 annual fee - and several other mid-tier credit cards offer better perks and more long term value.
American Express has favored their Amex Gold and Amex Platinum Cards for more recent updates, leaving the Amex Green Card in the dust.
The Green Card is long overdue for a major update, so maybe the name change is the first step for a refresh later this summer?
Or maybe we'll see a "New" version of the Green Card that will exist alongside the "Classic" version?
