Is Chase Forcing Product Changes?
It appears that some cardholders with the OG Chase Freedom credit card might be getting automatically product changed to the Chase Freedom Unlimited.
Select customers have recently received this message:
We're upgrading your Freedom card to Freedom Unlimited® Visa Signature to bring you unlimited cash back potential. Your upgrade will happen automatically.
The OG Chase Freedom (also called the Freedom with Ultimate Rewards card) earns 5% back (or really 5X Points) on rotating categories each quarter - but it's no longer open to applications because it was replaced by the Chase Freedom Flex® a few years ago.
Daniel here - I actually have two of these OG Freedom cards myself. One from opening it way back in 2018 and one from product changing another Chase card a few years ago.
While I personally haven't received any message about product changes for those cards, if your account was changed then you can call Chase to try to move back to the OG Freedom...
Or you could consider asking for a switch to the Freedom Flex card.
The Freedom Flex operates on the Mastercard network, while the OG Freedom operates on Visa.
The only real benefit for staying with a Visa card here would be to shop at Costco, which famously does not accept Mastercards in store.
The Chase Freedom Flex® could be a smarter product change though since this card earns an additional 3% back (or really 3X Points) on dining and drugstores - something the OG Freedom card does not do.
That fixed 3X dining multiplier can currently be stacked with the rotating 5X dining multiplier to get up to 7X back on dining with the Freedom Flex in Q4 of 2026!
